Reaching My Potential

Before kids, I was in great shape.  I worked out six days a week, watched what I ate, and took really good care of myself (of course, taking really good care of myself included smoking and vodka infused weekends).  I really never thought that that would change.

I remember being in the Dominican with Dirty Daddy for my brother's wedding in 2007.  At the time, we were pregnant with Bug, but didn't know it then.  We were relaxing with some friends and discussing how to stay in shape.  The wife of one of my brother's friends told me I looked great and asked how I stayed in shape.  I told her my gym regiment and thanked her for the compliment.

Later that day, Dirty Daddy and I were talking about when we would start planning our family.  I told him I planned to continue to exercise during my pregnancy and that the gym had a daycare, so I would take the baby with me to the gym as well.  Dirty Daddy laughed a bit.  He asked me if I really thought I would be working out six days a week once we had kids.  Of course I would, I said.  He laughed a little more and told me that I hadn't reached my potential yet, but he would love me even when I did.

Potential?  The potential to be a super fantastic Mommy?  The potential to perfectly balance work and home?  The potential to change diapers at break neck speed?

Nope.  The potential for my ass to grow without exercising six days a week.  Ha! Wouldn't happen.  I would shed the baby pounds in three months.  I would ramp up my exercise routine and look like I'd never given birth.  Dirty Daddy laughed some more and said just wait.

Well guess what Dirty Daddy?  I have not only reached my potential, I think I'm now working on surpassing expectations too.  Shit.

Cheers Dirties
